Why you're going: Operatic vocals meet thumping drums and electric cello at The Dark Side in Tempe
Last year, Cincinnati, Ohio’s Lung released one of the best records of 2025 when they put out The Swankeeper (Feel It Records). You should listen to it right now. In fact, you should listen to all of their releases because they are great, but at the moment, The Swankeeper rattles the cockles of our cynical, jaded hearts in the best possible ways.
Don’t take our word for it, though.
Get on over to your favorite streamer (preferably Bandcamp so you can pick up a copy for yourself) and take a listen to The Swankeeper (or 2022’s Let It Be Gone and 2017’s Bottom of the Barrel) and try to resist the beautiful, noisy, lovely chaos made by this exceptional two-piece band. Singer/electric cellist Kate Wakefield and drummer Daisy Caplan (formerly of the totally bitchin' Foxy Shazam) write the coolest, deceptively heavy, and totally catchy songs you’ve heard in a while. A trained opera singer, Wakefield coaxes a low-end growl out of the cello that puts any Gibson Les Paul to shame and makes the best bass players feel redundant.
Lung incorporates the sometimes delicate, sometimes pounding, and always intense virtuosity of Wakefield's cello with Caplan's intricate and powerful drumming. Over the top of the fantastic racket made by just the two of them is Wakefield's unique and, it bears repeating, hauntingly beautiful voice.
