The Signal: Punks Unplugged recharges at Rip's

Weeknights at local bars are often a gamble, but the first Wednesday of every month at Rip’s Fine Ales has become a sure bet. Punks Unplugged—the long-running showcase of stripped-back sets from the scene’s loudest voices—is under new management and finding a fresh gear.

Now helmed by local promoter and videographer Ethan Anonymous, the event is bridging the gap between Phoenix’s punk history and its rising talent. Originally founded by Jamie Szabo (who now hosts the equally essential Weird Wednesday at Rip's), the show has evolved into a mission to professionalize the "free bar show" circuit.

“I wanna get over this mentality of bar-payout free shows and get musicians paid," says Anonymous. "Guitars cost money, guitar strings cost money."

The April 1st Lineup: This Wednesday features a heavy-hitting roster including Ivan Rose (Deathguilt), Amy 80 and Matt 80 (TA 80), and pop-punk veteran Jeff Gonzalez (Dirt Bike Kids). The bill is rounded out by Dinosaur Love, Rad Pinkard, JR Hogsett, and resident performer Jesse Yonkers (El Googly Diablo).

It’s the real "Signal" in a city full of noise—acoustic, authentic, and built on community.
